Celebrities and Archives of the Republic of China
When studying history and writing essays, historians utilize various materials to discuss specific topics or contents. Most of materials are shown in forms of documents, books or archives. Because of their relevance to historical issues, these materials could be also called “historical materials.” How to use archives properly to write history has already become a common task for historians and an important training for students of departments of history at universities. However, there are still some limitations or obstacles as using archives. Since the modern time, more and more governmental departments or institutes have been established. With the improvement and development of printing skills, amounts of documents increase rapidly as well. The more historical materials are, the harder historians see the whole picture of them. Nowadays, many scholars emphasize evidences when studying and arguing historical questions; and their discourses are based on documents and archives. Some of them even confront the embarrassing situation that they could not write essays without archives. This kind of research approach is totally different and far from the teaching of ancient historiography. Instead of focusing on archives, ancient historians paid more attention on thinking and interpretations, which would be more influential and illuminating, and leave their lasting influences to future generations.
