Lecture Report: Revolution and Chen Duxiu’s Images of A Country” by Professor Eugene W. Chiu
2015-09-30
On September 15th, 2014, the research team “Chinese Identity and The Formation Of A Modern State” of the program “The Formation of Modern China” held by Center of Humanities Research, NCCU, invited Professor Eugene W. Chiu from Department of History of Tunghai University to give a presentation named “Revolution and Chen Duxiu’s Images of A Country”.

In the early stage, there are very few researches about Chen Duxiu. Most researches are about another important person, Hu Shih. What’s more, Chen Duxiu held an awkward position between Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China. Therefore, Professor Chiu is very interested in Chen Duxiu.

Professor Chiu reminded us, that it is easier to understand Chen Duxiu’s images of a country after understanding Chen’s process of thinking. To Chen Duxiu, the most ideal image of country in his mind was not Germany or Japan, but France, the country which calls for liberty, equality and fraternity. Chen Duxiu connected liberty to human rights, equality to socialism. However, this also leads to Chen’s vague images of a socialistic country.

In conclusion, Professor Chiu not only provided us the process of pursuing one’s study and thinking, but also reminded us not to break the relation between tradition and modern times.
