National Chengchi University (NCCU), stimulated by the Ministry of Education’s “Project of Establishment of Centers for Humanities and Social Sciences in Universities and Colleges,” officially founded the Humanities Research Center (HRC) in 2008 in accordance with the resolutions of the 147th University Affairs Meeting. Striving at becoming a top research center in Taiwan, the HRC is committed to promoting teaching and research quality of humanities and social sciences, strengthening its international competitiveness, increasing academic influence on national developments, and elaborating the liberal spirit. Missions of the HRC are as follows.

1. To promote interdisciplinary research and teaching of humanities and social sciences.
2. To increase domestic and international academic interaction and cooperation, investigate advanced issues, and enhance the development of humanities and social sciences.
3. To publish scholarly monographs and journals regularly for the circulation of knowledge.
4. To digitize archival materials about the history of the Republic of China and establish databases for the study of history of modern China.
5. To set up an official academic website (http://hc.nccu.edu.tw/) to present latest research results.

Since 2010, the HRC has worked on two main projects. One is writing and publishing a book series of History of R.O.C., and the other is a research project on “Formation of Modern China.”

The HRC received a subsidy for a publication project from the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2010. More than 100 domestic and international scholars were invited to participate in writing History of R.O.C. for the commemoration of the centenary of the Republic of China. In this 12-volume book series, there are 6 main categories, 130 subthemes, and 7 introductory essays. The series of History of R.O.C. was published in October 2011, and its publication represented a milestone in academia in Taiwan.

Since May 2010, the HRC has begun to carry out an interdisciplinary research project— “Formation of Modern China and Regional Security.” Professor Cho-Yun Hsu, an Academician of Academic Sinica, is invited to be the chief investigator of this project. The HRC also invites scholars from different academic disciplines and universities to organize research groups. Through this project, the HRC aims to examine important factors in the formation of modern China. The depth and breadth of this interdisciplinary and inter-university project shows its importance and uniqueness. The HRC hopes that the project will be a research model and contribute to the academia and the society.

For the past few years, the HRC has devoted to publishing scholarly monographs and establishing academic on-line databases. From 2011 to 2015, the HRC had published 33 scholarly monographs for NCCU Humanities Series. Besides History of R.O.C., the HRC re-edited and published Chiang Kai-Shek’s Chronological Event Transcripts covering the period of War of Resistance against Japan. Since December 2011, the HRC has assisted in publishing Journal of the History of Ideas in East Asia as well. In addition, the HRC established two on-line databases— “The Database for the Study of Modern Chinese Thought and Literature 1830-1930” and “Chinese Association for Relief and Ensuing Services (CARES) E-Archive,” and they are accessible to users now.

Through publications, databases and other research highlights, the HRC has shown its energy and strength and played a leading role in the study of history of modern China in Taiwan. In the future, the HRC will continue to dedicate to research of humanities and social sciences and increase its academic impact.
