The outbreak of the Marco Polo Bridge Incident on July 7, 1937 indicated the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War which lasted for a long period of eight years. The Second Sino-Japanese War not only had an impact on hundreds of millions of Chinese people who lived under its threat but also tremendously affected China, Japan, or even the whole world. However, as time goes by, this big event has gradually been forgotten and became a dim and distant memory.
In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Humanities Research Center of National Chengchi University is jointly holding the “Conference on Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War” with the Chungcheng Cultural and Educational Foundation, and the KMT (Kuomintang) Party Archives Library. The principal themes of this two-day conference are “The Chinese Expeditionary Force and Battles in Asia” and “Images and Memories of War”. By putting the Second Sino-Japanese War in the context of world history, the conference is aimed at examining the relation between the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II in a holistic perspective. It is also expected that through this conference, the public will comprehend the importance of the Second Sino-Japanese War, reappraise actions of Chinese Armed Forces and civilians, and consider meanings of their sacrifices.
