One: The Purpose of this Lecture
Religion is the culmination of human culture, and chaplains
represent the wellspring of the essence of religion.
Christianity, Catholicism and even Tibetan Buddhism all have
complete systems designed to train their chaplains. In
comparison, the Han system is employing the use of Buddhist
Centers and graduate schools to connect with the mechanisms
of modern education under the impact of the electronic era.
However, after Buddhist monks have received their education
from basic Buddhist centers to graduate school, the
important things are their profession of lifelong learning
and the training received for their field of service, this
educational issue within the contemporary clergy should be
considered and addressed. Under the current environment of
globalization and digitalization, Buddhist teachings and the
spirit of Zen is being applied in many different forms in
jobs involving medicine, psychology and social service all
over the world. How the educational goals and guidelines
used in training chaplains should be defined and what kind
of innovative perspectives should be cultivated to meet the
demands of the contemporary environment is still a matter
waiting to be jointly discussed by the academia and the
clergy. Furthermore, under the combined blows of
globalization, digitalization, population aging and the
economic crisis, the challenges that Taiwanese society face
are even grimmer. The issues that need to be brought to the
table include: the roles of the clergy when facing huge
social changes, the knowledge they should acquire to fulfill
their mission of spreading religious spirit and wisdom and
the goals of the chaplains when servicing social networks.
These issues need to be discussed on a mid-to-long-term
basis, to prepare an education system that produces Buddhist
clergymen who are capable of bearing the burden of the era.
With these goals in mind, we have organized this seminar.
