Introduction to Project

The process of China’s participation in international
organizations, is closely associated with China’s
international position, domestic construction, national
mentality and other aspects. Thus, the process is one of the
major factors in the formation of modern China; moreover, it
serves as a reference for the reconstruction of
international order in 21th century, the integration and
rise of East Asia and the quest of R.O.C. for participation
in international organizations. Besides, the opportunity for
the combination of fundamental humanity research and the
realistic concerns of social science is provided.

So far, the interpretations of this issue are from the west-
centered perspective, discussing how China was included in
the world system led by the west. Apart from that, Mainland
China is eager to inherit the history of modern China’s
international participation and intends to ignore the fact
that R.O.C. is also part of the world system. The goal of
this project is to inspect into the active factors and
achievement of modern China’s international participation;
on the other hand, it shows the significance and influences
of the process of R.O.C’s participation in the world system.

The characteristic of the project is the combination of
NCCU’s advantage of researches on modern history of China
and on international relations, systematically and
thoroughly inspecting into the relation between China and
the world system, especially into the participation in the
UN. In the aspect of history, modern China’s participation
in major international organizations, Hague Peace
Conference, League of Nations and the United Nations is
discussed, including the process of that after quitting from
the UN, R.O.C protects national sovereignty and seeks
position in the UN by actively taking part in international
organizations. On the other hand, the project also
researches on the R.O.C’s real participation in General
Assembly, Security Council, Secretariat and other
specialized institutions. Last, the project intends to
integrate humanity and social science and to conclude
historical experiences as the reference for R.O.C’s future
participation in international activities.
